A semi caught fire Friday afternoon on Highway 49 in Altaville shortly after being struck by a small pickup truck.

Angels Camp Police Chief Scott Ellis said the accident occurred about 4:40 p.m. Friday near the offices of Aspen Street Architects.

Ellis said at least one of the two people in the pickup was medi-flighted from the scene, but was released from the hospital within 24 hours.

The semi became fully engulfed in flames after the pickup struck its fuel tank, Ellis said.

The driver was able to get out, despite with minor injuries and was not transported by paramedics.

Ellis said the road was closed for a short period while firefighters extinguished the flames and moved the vehicles off the road.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but Ellis said driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol was not suspected.
