A Copperopolis man who was walking next to the edge of Little John Road was struck and killed Sunday evening by a pickup truck, California Highway Patrol personnel in San Andreas said Monday.

David R. Best, 75, was walking north on the right hand side of Little John, north of Bow Drive, south of Copper Cove Village in Copperopolis, when he was struck by a 1973 Chevrolet pickup driven by Joseph M. Rabeneau, 34, also a Copperopolis resident, just after 8 p.m. Sunday, CHP Officer Tobias “Toby” Butzler said in a crash report.

Rabeneau was driving the pickup at 55 miles per hour. Rabeneau “immediately returned to the scene and is fully cooperating with the investigation,” Butzler said.

Asked Monday afternoon if any citation or arrest was expected in the case, Butzler responded, “Still under investigation.”

Drugs and alcohol were not suspected as factors in the crash. Butzler urged anyone who was in the area of the crash before 8:06 p.m. Sunday and saw a pedestrian walking near the road to call CHP San Andreas headquarters at (209) 754-3541.
