A woman from Sonora died after she reportedly walked out into oncoming traffic on Highway 108 near Stockton Road Friday evening and was hit by two vehicles.

The collision comes less than four weeks after an accident where a homeless man was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on Stockton Road.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, the Sonora woman was on the south shoulder of Highway 108, east of Stockton Road, about 6:30 p.m. when she ran into the eastbound lane, apparently in an attempt to cross the highway.

The woman's name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Sonora-area CHP public information officer Faustino Pulido could not be reached for comment.

The woman was hit by a man driving a 2016 Chrysler about 50 mph at the time of the accident.

According to the press release, he attempted to stop.

The woman became airborne and was then hit by a 2018 Ford, driven at approximately 50 miles per hour by a Chinese Camp man.

Conditions were described as cold, cloudy and rainy.

The accident remains under investigation.

Krista Deans, communications manager for Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, said on Monday that Larry Hunter, the homeless man hit by a vehicle on Stockton Road on Saturday, Jan. 26, was not listed in their hospital directory.
On Jan. 28, Deans said Hunter was listed in serious condition at the hospital.

Hunter was flown to the hospital with a serious head injury after he was struck by a 2017 Nissan Titan traveling westbound from Sonora about 5:50 p.m. near a homeless encampment on Mill Villa Court.

Stockton Road has been the site of multiple fatal pedestrian collisions in recent years.

In November 2017, Tony Ortega, 38, of Sonora, was hit and killed by a vehicle while he crossed the street outside of a marked crosswalk near the Mother Lode Fairgrounds at night.

In March 2015, Kathy Warner, 61, of Stockton, was killed by a vehicle as she left the Sonora Celtic Faire at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds.
