A woman is wanted for questioning after a 14-year-old girl was hit by a car outside Mark Twain Elementary School in Angels Camp on Thursday morning.
The girl sustained minor injuries, was treated by paramedics at the scene, but not transported to a hospital, said Angels Camp Chief of Police Scott Ellis.
Ellis said the girl was sideswiped by the passenger side of a dark colored sedan on San Joaquin Street, east of Alpine Street, at about 8 a.m., approximately 100 yards from Mark Twain Elementary School.
Ellis said the department was possibly investigating the incident as a case of hit and run.
Two children said the driver pulled over and checked on the child, Ellis said. When the girl said she was OK, the woman got back into her car and left.
“We need to talk to the driver of the vehicle to determine what actually happened,” Ellis said.
Ellis said the collision likely occured when the vehicle was driving about 5 to 10 miles per hour.
As of Thursday afternoon, Ellis said the department had not determined the identity of the driver.
The woman was about 5 feet, 10 inches, 125 pounds, with brown hair. Her hair was tied into a bun and she was wearing black sweats, a dark colored sweatshirt and “Ugg-type boots,” Ellis said.
The make and model of the car has not been determined, Ellis said.
Photos were provided by a woman who heard a noise and saw the the child and the car, but not the actual contact, Ellis said.
One person provided the department with a possible identification of the vehicle and its owner, but it wasn’t a match, Ellis said.
Mark Twain Union Elementary School District Superintendent Julia Tidball said the accident occurred in an area where there were no sidewalks.
Tidaball also said the area did not have “a lot of congestion” from pedestrians or drivers compared to an area directly in front of Mark Twain Elementary School.
Ellis described the area as a “two-lane residential roadway” without marked crosswalks, but he was not sure about the normal flow of traffic.
Mark Twain Elementary School is located at 646 Stanislaus Ave. in Angels Camp. Stanislaus Avenue and San Joaquin Avenue intersect at the school property.
According to the California Department of Education, Mark Twain Elementary School is a K-8 public school with an enrollment of approximately 545 students.
Tidball said school staff did not recognize the woman in the photograph.
“We hope that people take a look at the Facebook posting and assist us in finding out who hit our student. It’s very upsetting to us,” she said. “This person hit this student, stopped, then continued on. I can’t even fathom doing that.”
The girl was released to family after the accident.
