A Valley Spring mother died and two other people, including her 8-year-old son, were hospitalized for injuries resulting from a head-on collision Sunday night in Burson involving a suspected drunk driver.

Chelsea Lund, 27, was pronounced dead at Mark Twain Medical Center in San Andreas. The accident was reported to California Highway Patrol at 8:23 p.m., according to an incident report from CHP.

Lund’s son, Kaiden Lund, 8, of Valley Springs, and Dylan Burch, 27, of Lockeford, were passengers in the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze she was driving. Both were transported by life flight to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment of moderate to major injuries, the report stated.

The CHP reported that a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 going northbound on Pettinger Road north of Messing Road illegally crossed over double yellow lines to pass a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado.

The 1996 Chevrolet Silverado then collided head-on in the southbound lane with the front of a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Chelsea Lund, the report stated.

The CHP stated the driver of 1996 Chevrolet Silverado, Donald Jackson, 26, of Wallace, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving while under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Jackson was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael for treatment of major injuries.

Dusty Jackson, 22, of Valley Springs, was driving the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado and was not injured. He was booked into Calaveras County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury.

CHP Officer Eric Parsons said there were no further details available to be released on Monday. The collision remains under investigation.
