Overcast skies and chilly temperatures provided the backdrop Tuesday morning as the American flag was raised in Courthouse Square.

Two county employees shared the honors of unfolding and attaching the flag, bringing to a conclusion the yearlong effort to install a flagpole to the downtown Sonora park.

The 30-foot aluminum pole was erected earlier this week and the lights that surround the base were given a trial run Monday night.

The flag will remain at half staff until Dec. 30, in honor of President George H.W. Bush who died Nov. 30.
