A 14-year-old girl sustained major injuries after she was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Campo Seco Road and Lime Kiln Road Tuesday night, and the driver fled.

Sonora-area California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Faustino Pulido said the teen was knocked into tall grass and lay on the side of Campo Seco Road for many minutes. She extended her arm above the vegetation, and a passing driver noticed and stopped to render aid and contact law enforcement, he said. She was airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera.

The CHP identified the teen as Ruth Shopp, of Sonora. She was either walking or jogging on the side of the road. Pulido said the agency had not yet received information on the make, model or color of the vehicle, but knew from evidence at the scene that the vehicle had damage to the front right lights and likely damage to the side mirror.

Pulido said the girl was alone about 6:15 p.m. on the north shoulder of Campo Seco Road, east of Crooked Lane toward Lime Kiln Road. Pulido said he was not sure if she was wearing exercise clothing.

According to a CHP press release, the driver did not stop or notify emergency medical response or law enforcement.

According to Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office logs, a caller at 6:19 p.m. was out with a “distraught female near the side of the road” at the intersection of Campo Seco Road and Lime Kiln Road.

Pulido said he did not have any additional information about the person who stopped to help.

When officers arrived, they found broken vehicle components in the westbound traffic lane of Campo Seco Road. Pulido said the broken parts found were consistent with front lighting components and may have also included a side mirror.

Pulido said the family of the girl was notified that she was airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. He was not sure who in the family the CHP contacted.
