A Tuolumne-area man was shot in the upper body by a Hodge Avenue homeowner on Tuesday night after the homeowner and his wife discovered he and a Sonora woman had broken into their rental property next to their residence.
Sgt. Andrea Benson said the incident was still under investigation and the motive was not known at this time.
The man was transported by air ambulance late Tuesday night, she said, and had not been interviewed or booked into the Tuolumne County Jail.
Before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a man had been shot.
An elderly couple that lives on Hodge Avenue had heard people talking in a rental home that they own next to their residence and walked over to investigate, Benson said.
Benson said the couple was confronted by the man inside the house. The couple feared for their safety, she said, and the elderly man shot the intruder with a handgun once in the “upper torso.”
