Caltrans crews on Highway 108 have cleared snow and debris off 9,624-foot Sonora Pass, the second-highest paved route over the Sierra Nevada range, and they intend to open the gate at Kennedy Meadow Road at 2 p.m. today to all public motor vehicles.

That means people can drive from Sonora to Bridgeport and U.S. 395, connecting Mother Lode communities to the Eastside Sierra for the first time since late November, when Caltrans closed Highway 108 and Highway 4 for winter, according to Caltrans staff based in Stockton.

The earliest opening date on record for Sonora Pass is April 8, 1977. The latest opening date is June 26, 1956.

Crews on Highway 4 are making progress on opening Ebbetts Pass but as of Thursday morning there was no definite opening day or date set yet, Warren Alford with Caltrans District 10 said in a phone interview.

Tioga Pass on Highway 120 remains closed at the east entrance to Yosemite National Park.

Sonora Pass on Highway 108 has been closed since Nov. 21. Tioga Pass on Highway 120 has been closed since Nov. 29. Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4 has been closed since Nov. 30.
