An Oakdale man is in Calaveras County Jail after an arrest Thursday afternoon in connection with the theft of four boats at Lake Tulloch last month.
The boats were stolen from private docks in the Poker Flat and Conner Estates area on Aug. 31. Three boats were stripped of valuables and left to drift in the lake. The fourth one — a white 2006 North River fishing boat — is still missing.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office served two search warrants to recover items they say were stolen from the boats as well as other items that had been reported stolen in the Copperopolis area. One search location was on Woodland Avenue in Modesto and the other on D Street in Oakdale.
Justin Labass, 29, of D Street in Oakdale, was arrested and charged with grand theft, burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person.
Labass is on post release community supervision and is a convicted felon, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rachelle Whiting said.
She said detectives were given surveillance video from lakefront homeowners as part of the investigation but could not reveal whether the footage lead them to an arrest.
“I can say it was good, old fashioned police work,” she said.
