A Sunnyvale man died after a vehicle accident Saturday morning in the Chinese Camp area.

Michael Edward Ross, 50, of Sunnyvale, died after his 2015 BMW K1300 motorcycle collided with a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta driven by John David Wagner, 47, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, at 7:32 a.m. Saturday on Highway 120 west of Jacksonville Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Ross approached at a high rate of speed and turned into the westbound lane in an attempt to pass Wagner, who was driving about 70 mph in the eastbound lane, CHP said.

Wagner also turned into the westbound lane in attempt to pass traffic, when the left side of his vehicle collided with the right side of Ross’ motorcycle, CHP said.

The motorcycle was propelled onto the westbound shoulder, where it struck a raised asphalt curb. After hitting the curb, Ross and the motorcycle descended an embankment, collided with a downed tree before coming to rest. He died of blunt force trauma at the scene.

After the collision, Wagner parked on the westbound shoulder.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the accident, CHP said.
