The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County will meet at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 3, at the Tuolumne County Emergency Services Building, 18440 Striker Court, in East Sonora.

There are seven principles and six sources of faith forming the backbone of Unitarian Universalism. Judith Shiner will continue the consideration of the seventh principle, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” In her talked titled “A Hunter’s Story, Monks, Fleas, Elephants, Lost Marbles, Crime Fighters and the Seventh Principle.”

Native Sonoran Judith Shimer grew up attending elementary school at the Sonora Dome and attended Notre Dame High School in Belmont and graduated from Sonora High School. After living in Mariposa County for 30 year, Judith returned to Tuolumne County and now lives in Sonora Vista.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meets in Sonora on the first and third Sundays and in Douglas Flat on the second the fourth Sundays of each month.

St Matthew Lutheran Church will celebrate Ash Wednesday at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6.

Ashes will be placed on the forehead of those in attendance in observance of repentance and human mortality.

Ashes will be distributed during Masses at 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., as well as at noon without Mass.

Mount Calvary Lutheran Church will hold a Sunday Observance of Ash Wednesday at 11 a.m. March 3 at the church, 24176 Pine Lake Drive in Sugar Pine.

Lenton worship services will held at 11 a.m. March 10, 17, 23, 31 and April 7. Each service will be followed by a salad bar luncheon.

Stations of the Cross will be prayed at churches within St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish throughout Lent.

Services will be held March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5 and 12. They will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 127 Jackson St., in Sonora, and at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 11700 Catholic Cemetery Road in Big Oak Flat.

The choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia will host a Community Hymn Festival at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23 in the church sanctuary.

Guest artist Dr. Daryl Hollinger has put together a program of well-known hymns for the audience to sing together. Hollinger is an organist and composer and will accompany many of the hymns on the church’s Rodgers organ, including his own composition as a prelude to one of the hymns. Other hymns of varying styles will feature piano, flute, handbells and trumpet.

Hollinger teaches musicianship, music theory and piano at Columbia College, directs the Columbia College Community Chorus and is music director for the First Congregational Church of Murphys.

An offering will be taken to offset expenses, and a reception will be held in the church’s Faith Hall after the festival.
