Discover Life Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sonora will host its 17th annual Veterans Day Recognition Program Saturday at the church, 40 N. Forest Road in Sonora.

The event will honor those who served or are serving to protect America’s freedom. All veterans, whether active or retired, having served or are serving in any of the armed forces, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines, are invited to attend.

Soulsbyville United Methodist Church on Thursday will hold its monthly senior night for people 60 and older.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. in the church’s social hall and will include dinner, games and island music performed by Kalolaine and Friends. Dinner will include cowboy beans, loaded baked potatoes, salad, corn bread and dessert. Cost for dinner is $7 per person.

Sierra Bible Church’s Oasis group meets from 10 a.m. to noon the third Thursday of most months.

The Sonora United Methodist Church will hold its annual Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23.

The free dinner will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Turkey and a vegetarian main dish will be provided along with mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, gravy and rolls. All are welcome. Anyone who wishes to bring a dish to share is encouraged to bring a dessert.

This year’s dinner will be served in memory of Bill Dunlavy, a who served the community as a member of the Sonora Lions Club, Korean War Veterans, Sons in Retirement and the Columbia College Foundation, among others. He served in many ways at the Sonora United Methodist Church and baked and carved many turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving dinners that the church has provided over the years. Dunlavy died on Aug. 3. His son, Bill Jr., will carry on his father’s tradition and be in the kitchen this Thanksgiving.

Donations of canned food for the Mother Lode Food project green-bag program will be accepted, and volunteers are being sought for the dinner.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora will host a Christmas Fair from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at its parish hall.

The sale will include gift baskets, jewelry, crafts, baked goods and Christmas, religious and white elephant items.

Breakfast will be sold from 7 to 10 a.m. for $5 per person. Burritos ($6) and tostadas ($5) will be sold from noon to 4 p.m. A drawing for cash prizes will be held at 6:30 p.m. Ticket holders need not be present to win.

The St. Matthew Lutheran Church Women’s Missionary League will collect blankets and socks for the Lambert Community Drop-In Center during November.

The group’s current focus is on soteriology, the doctrine of salvation.
