A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a nonprofit group’s mobile shower bus to aid the homeless has been delayed until April 18 due to rain.

Hazel Mitchell, co-founder and CEO of the group behind the project, Give Someone A Chance, said the decision was made to delay the ceremony that was previously scheduled for Friday near the former Sonora Community Hospital on Forest Road because a near 100-percent chance of rain was forecast.

Mitchell said the ceremony will now take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 18 at “The Commons” area of Sierra Bible Church, at 15171 Tuolumne Road in East Sonora.

“We appreciate everyone’s eagerness to be a part of the event,” Mitchell stated in a written notice. “We apologize for any inconveniences that this may have caused. We hope that everyone is safe throughout the storm.”

Mitchell and her husband, Dick, spent more than a year working on the project with a team of volunteers.

The bus was donated to the organization by the county, and the interior was renovated to include two shower stalls that will provide warm showers for the county’s homeless population.

Much of the work has been completed, and the group plans to launch the bus sometime next month.

At full operation, they hope to take the bus around the county on a daily rotating schedule at three to four locations spread across Jamestown, Tuolumne and Sonora.

The annual operating costs are expected to top $100,000.

Mitchell said several fundraisers planned in the coming weeks to raise money for operating the bus will remain on schedule.

Here’s a list of upcoming fundraising events where people can get a chance to see the completed bus in person:

• 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6, Save Mart at 1045 Mono Way in Sonora.

• 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. April 8, Sierra Bible Church at 15171 Tuolumne Road in East Sonora.

The Mitchells will also host an ice cream social in the Promiseland building at Sierra Bible Church from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 9 to educate people about homelessness.
