Volunteers for the Hospice of Amador and Calaveras were honored at luncheons held last week in both counties.

The first luncheon, held April 16 at the Highway House in Jackson, celebrated the Amador County volunteers, and an April 17 event at the Historic Murphys Hotel honored Calaveras County volunteers.

In the two days, more than 120 people dined, and heard words of inspiration and appreciation by HOAC staff, including Executive Director Ariane Debien, Volunteer Coordinator Renee Davis, Thrift Store Manager Dave Carlton, Griefbusters Coordinator Tammy Beilstein, and HOAC Chaplains George Stathos and Mike Wilson. Guests were also treated to a tribute video created by HOAC Chaplain Mike Wilson.

Additionally, at both events, volunteers were given several gifts, and service milestones were recognized for individuals who had reached three, five, 10, 15, 20 and even 25 years of volunteer service.

Among those receiving recognition for their dedicated and loyal service were Jackson Thrift Store volunteers Barbara Giannini and Nancy Powell, who each received a 25-year pin and a bouquet of fresh flowers, and Jackson Thrift Store volunteer Lisa Conti-Ripley, who received her 20-year pin and flowers.

Hospice of Amador and Calaveras has been serving as the two-county region’s only nonprofit, independent hospice agency for more than 35 years. In that time, HOAC has never turned away a patient for services due to inability to pay. In her remarks to Monday’s gathering, HOAC

“In 2017, our volunteers, among many other things, made 942 patient visits, conducted 102,000 thrift store transactions, and served 53 children with 127 Griefbuster visits,” Debien said. “We are absolutely blessed by their dedication and commitment to our mission.”

“Without our 194 volunteers, we simply would not be able to provide the level of consistently available, quality care that we have built our reputation on,” said Davis. “Our volunteers truly enable us to serve our patients with all possible options for compassionate end-of-life care. There are no words to describe how valuable these people are to us.”
