MLL girls basketball teams prepare for league play

The Summerville girls varsity basketball team went big over Big Valley Christian with a 57-18 win in their Foundation Game last week.

They then took on Division I Pitman out of Turlock, losing 65-54.

“We played really well but they shot the lights out,” said Bears head coach Greg Smith.

Pitman had eight three-pointers and went 16 or 19 from the free point line.

“We played really strong help defense but they hit too many threes on kick-outs,” Smith said.

But the Bears are already showing glimmers of what’s to come as Mother Lode League play comes into view.

But the Bears are already showing glimmers of what’s to come as Mother Lode League play comes into view.

For starters they’ve got a roster stacked with experienced seniors.

On Thursday night senior Karina Herrera led the Bears offense with 22 points.

Senior Grace Fulkerson had 13 points.

And Emili Rico, also a senior showed her strength at the point guard position and Rebecca Hart rebounded extremely well and played tough defense, Smith said.

They’re on the road for a series of games before returning home Dec. 18 for a game against Union Mine. That game begins at 7 p.m.

Calaveras

Calaveras High School was 1-1 heading into the Galt Tournament held Friday and today.

Their first game against Liberty Ranch was a 54-48 loss.

They earned a 46-39 win against Tokay Thursday.

Calaveras has an away game against Colfax Tuesday, Dec. 5. They’ll be back at home to take on Dixon at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8.

Bret Harte

The Bullfrogs were also 1-1 heading into Friday’s tournament schedule in Escalon.

Bret Harte won their first game of the season in overtime 36-35 over Franklin. They dropped Thursday’s matchup against Escalon 41-28.

The Frogs are on the road next week. Their next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 12. They’ll play Escalon at 7:30 p.m.
