The Calaveras High School varsity football team travels to Escalon on Friday to take on the Escalon Cougars. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Calaveras looks to continue its winning streak after handily defeating the El Capitan Gauchos at home by a score of 44-24 on August 25. Escalon is also 1-0 after beating Enochs High last week 14-10.

“They’ve always been really, really tough,” head coach Jason Weatherby said about their upcoming opponent. “It’s kind of hard to tell. I’ve got kind of a weird feeling, but I’m feeling pretty good about what we have.”
Expectations for the team remain high this season after losing in the first round of last year’s Division V CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. Calaveras lost to lower-seeded Marysville 38-7 after an impressive 8-2 regular season record.
“Practice has been going good,” Weatherby said. “It’s been hot, so practices have been a little longer than usual because of the extra water breaks and the heat.”
Weatherby said he has put together an entirely new defensive scheme to counter the Cougars’ Wing-T offense.
“They’ve been doing it for 100 years,” he said. “Lots of pulling guards, stuff like that.”
As for the Calaveras offense, Weatherby characterized it as a “work-in-progress.”
“We have a new offensive line,” he said. “So it’s coming along, but nothing too different from what we’ve been running.”
The Calaveras offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage last week, allowing nine different running backs to rush for 326 yards and six touchdowns. The line also provided protection for senior quarterback Kyle Byrd to complete four passes for a total of 33 yards.
“I’m expecting a good game,” Weatherby added. “They are super competitive this year.”
Calaveras next travels to Modesto to play Modesto Christian High on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. They return to Fred Meyer Field for their next home game against Union Mine High on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
