Argonaut may have snapped the Sonora softball team’s winning streak, but coach Jon Abernathy continues to be impressed with his team’s work ethic.

In Wednesday night action the Wildcats had the 4-3 lead after the sixth.

But Argonaut’s bats caught fire and the Mustangs scored three in the seventh to take the 6-4 lead.

Sonora’s Kelsey Burr hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh and Lucy Hessler singled to give the ‘Cats the chance to even things up.

“We couldn’t manage to score her,” said Abernathy. “Our girls competed hard and had the lead most of the game, but we couldn’t overcome a couple of defensive miscues and a questionable call.”

Early spring rains meant multiple league games were rescheduled, stacking the team’s schedule as the league plays catch up. Sonora will have played four games by week’s end.

“Our girls are playing hard with good effort,” said Abernathy. “Right now we need some practice time.”

The Wildcats will play cross county rival Bret Harte tonight at Dome Field at 5:30 p.m.

Next week’s games include a home matchup against Amador Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and an away game at Calaveras Friday at 4 p.m.
