The Sonora High School wrestling team took home second place at the Mother Lode League wrestling championships at Linden High School behind championship winner Calaveras High School.
The Wildcats had six individual championships.
“We continued to wrestle very well as a team,” said coach Jon Abernathy. “This team has a real toughness that is evident with the effort put forth on the mat.”
Keanu Perez (115) pinned Phoenix Nguyen of Calaveras in :25; Trevor Davis (126) pinned Alexis Esquivel of ROP in 1:00; Colton Davis (132) won by decision,4-2, over Matt Elliott of Calaveras; Coleton Sanguinetti (14) won by decision over Caden Villegas of Calaveras (4-0); Devin Brisco (154) won by decision over Zack Oberle of Calaveras, 6-0; and Gabe Atwood (172) decisioned Brian Whaling of Argonaut 4-0. Brett Stewart also made the finals at 147 and was decisioned by Triston Sizuela of Linden, 7-2.
“It was Coleton Sanguinetti's fourth MLL championship and Keanu Perez's third,” said Abernathy.
Also placing were Travis Pingree (108) with a third place finish, Brian McGee (120) with a fifth place finish, Elijah MacDonald (197) with third and heavyweight Mark Camara also with a third place finish.
“The coaches were especially pleased for Colton Davis, who won his first MLL championship,” said Abernathy. Davis had been battling back from a foot injury for the past two seasons.
Coleton Sanguinetti won his fourth consecutive league title, an honor not too many wrestlers have accomplished, said Abernathy.
“Some of our younger wrestlers, especially Travis Pingree and Mark Camara, are showing marked improvement,” he said.
Next up for the ‘Cats is the Sac-Joaquin section Division 5 tournament at Delhi next Friday and Saturday.
