Sonora volleyball sinks Beyer

The Sonora High School varsity girls volleyball team won its second playoff game Thursday night with a win against Beyer High School, 25-21, 25-12, 20-25, 25-7.

Head coach Amy Wahlbrink had hoped for strong community support, and that's what she and the 'Cats got.

"We had a big crowd, and The Golden Regiment Band came and played for us. Between the band, the crowd, and the powerful volleyball that was being played, it was such an electric night in the gym," said Wahlbrink.

The Wildcats knew going into the game that Beyer had two strong outside hitters who they would have to defend.

"Our defense stepped up and played amazing against them. Beyer has a very powerful freshman outside hitter and so I know next time we face them, they will only be better,” said Wahlbrink.

Riley Patterson led the team on offense. She had 22 kills on 50 attempts.

Bella Patterson had 11 kills and Molly O'Reilly and Sha'nece Garrett had eight each.

Britney Canepa led the 'Cats' setters with 18 assists on 53 good sets.

Emma Collett had 26 digs and 25 perfect serve receive passes, Wahlbrink said.

Bella Patterson was perfect on passing, going 29 for 29 and adding 15 digs. Sarah Rosasco had four blocks to help Sonora on the net.

Maddi Fong led the service game going 15 for 15 with four aces.

"Each player contributed to our win last night. The girls really pulled together and everything finally came together for us. We had prepped on how to defeat their powerful outside hitters and the girls executed our plan perfectly. It was the best they have played as a team all season and I couldn't be prouder," said Wahlbrink.

The Wildcats will play Manteca High at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

And Wahlbrink's request of fans is the same for that game.

"We need people in the crowd, and the support really helps the girls elevate their play," she said.
