Saddle Creek Golf Club shot a final round 16-under par Tuesday to rally and claim the title at the annual Northern California Golf Association South Sierra Zone Championship at Quail Lodge Resort in Carmel.
Saddle Creek, consisting of David Kaja, Fred Gore, Randy Eckles and Ben Smith, defeated Greenhorn Creek, Sam Smith, Mark Weinheimer, Wayne Cuff and Mitchell McDaniel, on the first hole of a playoff.
Greenhorn Creek shot 12-under par Monday in the first round at Poppy Ridge, par 71, in Livermore to lead Apple Mountain by two strokes and Saddle Creek by four strokes.
Saddle Creek posted six eagles and five birdies against three bogeys in the final round in a format that takes the two best net scores per hole of a four-man team to forge a tie and playoff.
Both Saddle Creek and Greenhorn Creek finished the event at 24-under 260 and both earned the tournament’s two qualifying berths to the NCGA Zone Championship Aug. 28-29 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.
Thirteen teams participated.
