Sonora High School graduate Spencer Castro sped through the 121st running of the Boston Marathon Monday and finished in the top one percent of all competitors.

The 2007 Wildcat grad finished the 26-mile, 385-yard race in 2 hours, 38 minutes and 18 seconds to finish 147th overall out of a field of 30,074. He was the 130th fastest male and was 112th in his age division, the group with the most competitors.

Castro, a native of Groveland, and son of Butch and Coleen Castro, averaged 6:03 per mile in his third time participating in the Patriots’ Day event.

Castro was a decorated runner at Sonora and a four-year member of the Golden Regiment band.

“It is the unanimous opinion that he was one of the nicest, most coachable runners we ever had, and his family were some of the best team supporters we could have wished for,” said former longtime Sonora cross country and track coach Glenn Bass, who retired a couple of years ago.

Castro was the Valley Oak League cross country champion in 2006. He was on the 2004 Wildcat team that won the league and Sac-Joaquin Section title. The Wildcats won the league title all three seasons he ran cross country

In track and field that same year he was the Sac-Joaquin Section champion in the 800- and 1,600-meter run. In 2007, he was the 400 champ.

Following his Wildcat career, Castro walked on the track team at Stanford as a freshman and ran indoor and outdoor track as a middle distance runner.

After graduating from the prestigious Pac-12 school, Castro was the first intercollegiate coach hired by UC Merced, where he directed cross country for two seasons.

Castro lives now in Salt Lake City with his wife, Lace, and is a doctoral student at the University of Utah.
