The final irony

To the Editor:

During the recent presidential campaign, I was continually struck by one of the leaders of big business campaigning against Hillary Clinton because she was, supposedly, a tool of big business. I am sure that many who voted for Donald Trump, and had been disadvantaged by the strategies of big business, were cheered by that.

At the same time it was common knowledge to just about everyone that big business had immense influence over what goes on in Washington, especially after the flood gates of political financing were thrown wide open by the Supreme Court’s decisions of Citizens United. That decision does little to benefit the citizens as the title implies, but it does plenty to benefit powerful special interests and politicians entrenched by their support.

The final irony is that, even before the Electoral College had decided the final result, it became clear that big business was not just going to be influential in government, it was going to BE THE government.

We are about to live in a country powered by capitalism which is driven by pure self-interest. Unbridled, this self-interest is concentrated in the hands of a very few individuals, not the citizens as a whole. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people is still a worthy goal, and it is still within our power to create it, but time is short.
