Building unity

To the Editor:

The Bahá’ís Community of Sonora is grateful to The Union Democrat for the article highlighting challenges our Mother Lode community faces in connection with racism.

Racism is America’s most challenging issue, and long recognized in the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith. The oneness of humanity is the bedrock of those teachings. We are all children of one God, created in His image, though infinitely diverse in the expressions of human spirit and form.

Diversity, whether of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, education, or social status, has been a great source of strength and prosperity of our nation.

“A nation whose ancestry includes every people on earth, whose motto is E pluribus unum, whose ideals of freedom under law have inspired millions throughout the world, cannot continue to harbor prejudice against any racial or ethnic group without betraying itself. Racism is an affront to human dignity, a cause of hatred and division, a disease that devastates society.”

We appreciate the many who are already working to promote unity in our community. We are grateful for the countless, unrecognized acts to promote cohesiveness and inclusivity that happen daily throughout the county. Yet we recognize, as amply illustrated in the news article, that much remains to be done.

Sonora’s challenges in implementing the principle of the oneness of humanity are the growing pains of a youthful community coming into full maturity. We must learn to have open, honest and constructive dialogues in order to take steps toward abolishing racial prejudices.

In the spirit of addressing the deep challenges created by racism, we will be offering a series of discussions and consultations called, “Building Unity in Our Community.” If you would like to participate, please call (209) 768-3368 for more information.
