 Ramona ‘Mona’ Insular Tompkins

Ramona “Mona” Insular Tompkins, 78, of Groveland, California, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018. Mona was born on June 16, 1939, in Stockton to Cypriano Insular Sr. and Augustina (Majarucon) Insular. She graduated from Salinas High School in 1957 and then attended Hartnell Junior College and graduated with an Associates in Arts degree. Mona continued her education and attended San Francisco State, where she graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and became a school teacher.

Ramona “Mona” Insular Tompkins, 78, of Groveland, California, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018. Mona was born on June 16, 1939, in Stockton to Cypriano Insular Sr. and Augustina (Majarucon) Insular. She graduated from Salinas High School in 1957 and then attended Hartnell Junior College and graduated with an Associates in Arts degree. Mona continued her education and attended San Francisco State, where she graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and became a school teacher.

On Dec. 28, 1963, she married the love of her life, Robert W. Tompkins Sr., in Salinas. Mona’s teaching career consisted of over 31 years at Kammann Elementary, teaching first through fourth grade, and her last couple years at Mission Park Elementary in Salinas. Mona and Bob raised three boys as she enjoyed watching all three playing in local sports such as Steinbeck Youth Football, basketball, track and field and Atlantic Little League Baseball. Mona also enjoyed traveling and supporting the NSHS Color Guard and also became a booster member of the Santa Clara Vanguard and Cadet Corps. She enjoyed the art of pageantry with Bob, traveling across the states watching her sons march in the Santa Clara Vanguard organization from 1983-1993.

Mona retired in 1999, moved to Groveland, where she and husband Bob enjoyed RVing with the Tea Timers RV Club, cruising around the world with friends and family, golfing with Bob and the Pine Mountain Ladies Club, but most of all, spending time with her sons and grandchildren.

Mona is survived by her three sons, Rob Tompkins and his wife, Jill, of Templeton, Randy Tompkins, of Surprise, Arizona, and Ryan Tompkins and his wife, Mary, of Salinas; 11 grandchildren, Marissa, Taylor, Kylie, Cooper, Connor, Nathan, Chandler, Nolan, Joshua, Nixon and Chase. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Bob Tompkins; parents, Cypriano Sr. and Augustina; and her brother, Cypriano Jr.

A Mass will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 9, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Big Oak Flat. A celebration of life service will follow at the Pine Mountain Lake Country Club, “The Grill,” 12765 Mueller Drive, Groveland, CA 95321.
