Mary, most everyone called her Nancy in her broad circle of friends and family. She was Mom to many and a saint, hence her family nickname, Saint Mary Nancy. She was beloved by all.

Mary "Nancy" Higgins was born in Yonkers, New York. During her lifetime in New York State, she lived in Queens, Long Island and Upstate New York, eventually moving to Fort Myers, Florida, in 1978. From there she came to Jamestown to live closer to family in 2002.

She was a voracious reader and fearlessly independent. But mostly she was sent here to show love and compassion as was evident in her relationships with family, friends and strangers. If she had a motto, it would be, "Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Joy and celebrations were her favorite things. She loved animals, especially cats.

Nancy was involved with NOW and Planned Parenthood advocating for women's rights in the late 1970s and ‘80s. She also helped to develop and set up the first women's shelter in Fort Myers. She traveled to China in the 1990s for the first International Women's Conference, where "women hold up half the sky." Although she was not of any one faith, she enjoyed her time with her women friends and, while in Jamestown, she became involved with the Sunshine Ladies of the Jamestown Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Victor Julius, in 1981; and her brothers, Tom and Jack Higgins.
