Virginia passed peacefully in Sonora, California, on Dec. 11, 2017, at the age of 88. Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, and she will be dearly missed.

Born in San Francisco to Emil Andrew and Frieda Kalinowsky Anderson and graduated from Commerce High School, Virginia attributed her qualities of kindness and generosity to her parents. Virginia found great pleasure in providing for others and always found time to bake a pie, a batch or two of cookies and have the family over for dinner. She always reminded us that she only baked with the best, real butter!

Married to Joseph Castelli (passed June 2015) in 1949, the couple courted at Camp Meeker by the Russian River and danced to big bands at the Claremont Hotel. They made their first home in San Bruno, California, where they enjoyed their close neighborhood friends. Later they moved to Hillsborough where they resided for 48 years. Sonora was home since 2014, though it was familiar from attending many family events as well as the grandkids’ soccer games, tennis matches, ski races and swim meets over the years.

Virginia retired from the San Bruno Park School District as an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. She was active in the PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and loved sewing costumes for the Christmas school plays. Virginia enjoyed volunteering for the American Lung Association. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, San Francisco, and was a P.H.Q. of Job’s Daughters, San Francisco. Virginia and Joe generously volunteered for social committees and thoroughly enjoyed planning the cruises and mystery trips together.

Virginia is survived and will be missed by her son, David; and daughter, Joan Castelli Diestel (Tim); grandchildren, Jason Diestel, Garrett Diestel, Heidi Diestel Orrock (Jared); and great-grandchild Aurelia Orrock. She is the loving sister to Emil (Andy) Anderson Jr. and Elise Marshall (Bob) and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was a lovely lady with only love in her heart for her family and friends,

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family requests donations be made in Virginia’s memory to any favorite charity or Hospice of the Sierra.
