Carina Manthey passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, in her home with family by her side just 10 days shy of her 87th birthday.

Carina was born Dec. 20, 1930, in San Francisco to Edward Anthony Diaz and Mary LaTorre. Her parents divorced when she was very young. Her mother remarried George Ganas who adopted Carina in 1943.

Carina worked at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View as a clerk and nurse’s assistant until she moved to Tuolumne County. A 41-year resident of Tuolumne County, she retired from the Long Term Care Unit of Tuolumne General Hospital as a CNA.

She loved to travel and was able to visit Europe a number of times while her son, Richard, was in the Air force.

Raised as an only child, Carina was surprised to find out later in life that she had two brothers and six sisters, all born in British Guyana. One sister stayed in Guyana, while her two brothers and one sister ended up in England. Four of her sisters live in Australia.

In 2014, Carina was able to travel to Australia to meet four of her sisters. She had a wonderful visit.

She loved to crochet and make Christmas ornaments. She was a member of the Retired Public Employee Association of California, Mother Lode Chapter.

She loved her family and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very kind and loving person and will be missed by friends and family.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Mary (LaTorre) Ganas; father, Edward Anthony Diaz; stepfather, George Ganas; siblings, Diana Diaz, Franklin Delano Diaz and Angela (Diaz) O’Hagan.

Carina is survived by her children, Richard (Patricia) Manthey, of Cameron Park, Candra (Alan) Neff, of Sonora, and George Manthey, of Sacramento; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Frank) Eslami, Rachel (Mica) Bracey, Laura Manthey, Sara (Mike) Jennings, and Kristel Manthey; great-grandchildren, Liam and Nicolas Bracey, Elena, Tristan and Isabel Eslami; and siblings, Edward Anthony (Parvin) Diaz, Marie (Tony) Brandon, Faith Ember, Kareena Clifford and Mary Adonna (John) Leehane

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a gift in her name to Hospice of the Sierra, the Humane Society of Tuolumne County or Sonora Cat Rescue.
