Ed fought his final battle with Parkinson’s disease surrounded by family. He is now at peace and we are thankful he is free of that unforgiving disease. Born in Stockton, he is preceded in death by parents, Patrick Joseph and Edith Mae Fielding, brother, Robert, sister, Eleanor, and his wife of 55 years, Patricia Fayette Jones.

Ed loved music and played saxophone in grade school and high school as well as in the Stockton city jazz band. He also played at the dedication of the new bridge by the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora.

Ed joined the U.S. Navy after graduation from Stockton High School and trained as a radar man. Serving on the USS Arneb (AKA-56) during World War II, he was in every major battle in the Pacific including the liberation of the Philippines.
After the war in 1946 he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia. Under the GI bill, he attended Utah State University and received his BS in forestry. In 1952 he received his MS and teaching credentials from UC Berkeley and then moved his family to Rio Vista where “Joe” taught high school science for 31-plus years. He loved teaching and his students immensely.
After retiring, he moved to Coulterville, where he and Pat raised cattle on Pat’s historic family ranch, known by old timers as the “Murphy Ranch” (Polly Roberts and John Murphy). In honor of Ed, the cattle operation is currently marketed under “The J.E. Fielding Ranch.” Ed was involved in the Coulterville Odd Fellows Lodge No. 104, the Northern Mariposa County History Center, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ed is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Reynaldo Briseno, Karin Fielding and Louis Bickford, and Kimberly and Fred Korff; his grandson, Sean Baratone, and his wife, Julie; great-grandchildren Breyden and Rylee; and granddaughters, Valerie and Courtney Korff.

A memorial celebration will be held in Ed’s honor at 11 a.m. Dec 10 at the Coulterville IOOF Hall. In lieu of flowers, we hope you will contribute in Ed’s name to the IOOF Lodge No. 104, Coulterville, CA 95311 or to Parkinson’s research.
