Paula Melendez, of Sonora, passed away at Adventist Health Sonora on Sept. 12, 2017, after a brief illness. She was 92. Affectionately known as “Tia”, “Tia Pauline” and “Auntie Paula” by her numerous nieces and nephews, she was born in Standard on Jan. 25, 1925, to Juan and Guadalupe Reyes. Her father worked at the Standard Lumber Company (later Pickering Lumber Company), and she was raised in one of the company-owned houses. She married her husband, Miguel, on July 3, 1952. Miguel also worked at the Pickering Lumber Company and she spent all of her adult life living within a few miles of the home she was raised in.

Paula worked for many years at the Sandell Plastic Factory outside of Jamestown. After she retired from Sandell, she went to work for both St. Patrick’s Church in Sonora and All Saints Church in Twain Harte, providing many years of faithful service to the clergy and staff. Paula was a devout Catholic and had the honor of meeting the Pope in San Francisco in 1987.
Paula enjoyed traveling in California and sports. She was an avid Oakland A’s fan and was a season ticket holder for many years. In her younger years she enjoyed trips to Lake Tahoe and attended the Olympics at Squaw Valley in 1960. Her hobbies included ceramics, crocheting and movies, but above all else she truly loved spending time with her family and many friends, and will be dearly missed by all of them.

She is survived by her sister and nephew, Mary and Gilbert (Susan) Camacho, of San Francisco; niece, Sandra Mendoza-Barry (David), of Jackson; nephew, Ray (Joanie) Little, of Salida; niece, Rita (Trini) Mercado, of Sonora; great-nephews, Brian and Phillip Camacho, Robert (Jennifer) and Joseph Little, Justin (Jessica) and Jeremy Mendoza and Jose Paz (Ashley Clough), as well as many other nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel Melendez, in 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at St. Patrick’s Church in Sonora.
