Patty Brooks

1929 — 2016

Patty Brooks passed away on Dec. 25, 2016, in the early morning. Patty’s family was one of the pioneering families of Sonora. She was born to Louis and Melba Price in 1929, in Sonora. She lived most of her life in Sonora and Jamestown, attending Sonora Elementary and Sonora High schools.

Melba Price, Patty’s mom, was instrumental in constructing the first Sonora High School pool. This was due to the fact that Patty loved swimming so much that she hitchhiked all over the county to the different watering holes, and a pool was the only way to keep her safe and close by. In the ’80s, when the pool needed some reconstruction, Patty was one of the instrumental contributors to start the fundraising for the pool.

Following high school, Patty went on to U.C. Berkeley where she met her first husband, Lt. William Mailloux. A plane accident in 1958 caused the end of Lt. Mailloux’s life, leaving Patty with two children, Price and Deniece. In 1962, Patty met and married Leonard Brooks, a cattleman that she had coincidentally shared a dance with in high school. Leonard and Patty welcomed Lee Brooks in 1965. The ranch has been in Patty’s family for over 100 years. Patty’s grandfather and grand uncle were able to get the funds for the ranch during the Nome, Alaska, gold rush. Part of the ranch was a property in the mountains called Hulls Meadows. Patty, at a very young age, accompanied the men and cattle on a three-day cattle drive from the Price Ranch to Hulls Meadows. Patty and Leonard took over the Price Ranch in 1967. In the mid seventies, they had over 4,000 cow calf pairs and 135 broodmares. Even, by today’s standards, that was a sizable operation.

In 2013, Patty was the grand marshal for the Sonora Mother Lode Roundup Parade. She just loved waving and blowing kisses at everyone watching the parade. What a great day for Patty!!

When Patty was not on the ranch, Patty loved to play golf with Leonard and different women’s golf groups on various golf courses.

Patty is survived by her children, Deniece Mailloux (Audi), Price Mailloux (Barbara) and Lee Brooks (Miriam). Patty is also survived by two grandchildren, Hunter Rice and William Mailloux. Patty is predeceased by Lt. William Mailloux, her first husband, and Leonard Brooks, her husband of 51 years.
