Detectives looking for a suspect in an armed robbery at a Calaveras County pot farm got into a standoff Wednesday in Pioneer and arrested a man who had body armor and a firearm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office staff said Thursday.
Deputies with Calaveras County and Amador County SWAT personnel took a search warrant to a home on Meadow Drive in Pioneer looking for suspects and evidence of the Oct. 13 armed robbery at a marijuana grow site on Skull Flat Road in West Point.
Somebody was inside the Meadow Drive home Wednesday and would not come out. Sheriff’s staff said the standoff lasted about eight hours, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The SWAT deputies eventually took Jamie Mark Buchanan, 42, of Pioneer, into custody.
Buchanan was arrested by Amador deputies on suspicion of being a violent felon in possession of body armor and a firearm. Calaveras deputies said they will seek more charges against Buchanan stemming the Oct. 13 armed robbery. Buchanan’s bail at Amador County Jail was listed Thursday as $135,000.
Detectives also recovered property allegedly stolen during the West Point armed robbery.
Back in October, sheriff’s staff said multiple armed suspects went to the Skull Flat Road grow, identified themselves as law enforcement, tied up four victims, and stole about 500 marijuana plants, an unspecified amount of cash, and a black colored Ford F250. The truck has since been recovered. Victims told detectives there were five to six bad guys and three of them had guns.
Detectives are still looking for other suspects. Anyone who has information about them is urged to call the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office at (209) 754-6500 and ask for detectives or call their anonymous tip line at (209) 754-6030.
