The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Sonora woman early Wednesday after the attempted theft of a Jamestown car wash cash machine.

Authorities are still searching for two masked men who fled the scene.

The three had been doing burnouts in a stolen white Toyota pickup near Chip’s Chevron on the 18100 block of Highway 108 just after midnight before the vehicle stalled inside the car wash, according to Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office logs.

Sgt. Andrea Benson said while the vehicle was inside the car wash, the occupants wrapped a large chain around a cash machine and attached the chain to the bumper of the truck.

Their intent had been to dislodge the cash machine from the ground, but the vehicle’s engine died after they bent and damaged the machine.

The truck would not start again, Benson said, so the occupants fled and left the vehicle behind.

Witnesses reported seeing the woman and two masked men running from the car wash, and surveillance footage also recorded the incident, Benson said.

Before 1:45 a.m., deputies found a woman matching a description from witnesses near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Ninth Street, about a half mile away from the Chevron, Benson said.

The men were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts, being of average build and about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

A records check on the truck found that it had been stolen, Benson said.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the vehicle was stolen Tuesday in Tuolumne County.

Narrie Alfaro, 45, of Sonora, was booked on suspicion of criminal conspiracy, receiving a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, attempted grand theft, vandalism, and misdemeanor charge possession of burglary tools.

Benson said the woman was charged with felony vandalism because the value of the cash machine was determined to be above $950.

Alfaro was booked into the Tuolumne County Jail before 2 a.m. Wednesday on $20,000 bail, and bailed out before the day was over.
