'Whole lotta snow' in the Sierra means huge workload for Caltrans

Union Democrat staff

Caltrans has begun clearing three mountain passes, including Highway 4/Ebetts Pass, shown here, Highway 89/Monitor Pass and Highway 108/Sonora Pass.

The gate at Eagle Meadows Road on Highway 108 has been opened, but the heavy snow is making it hard for Caltrans officials to say when crews will reach the gate at Kennedy Meadows.

“Whole lotta snow up there!” Caltrans said in a news release.

They also said they could not estimate the date the passes will open due to the “potential of more weather and the challenges of clearing high-altitude roads after a wild and wicked winter.”
