May 1 is the deadline to register for the 2017 Miss Calaveras Scholarship Program.

The winner of the contest will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Second- and third-place finishers will receive $600 and $400 scholarships respectively. Special awards for the most photogenic, most talented and most community-service driven will also be given.

To qualify, contestants must be 17 to 23 years old and must attend a Calaveras school unless enrolled in a college or university. The individual must be in good standing in school and have at least a 2.0 grade point average, among other qualifications.

The contest will take place May 18 at the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. Contestants will be judged on interview, health and fitness, talent and evening gown.

Last year, Makayla Ruthrauff was named the 2016 Miss Calaveras. She was selected from five other participants.
