A 3-year-old girl died today when she fell into the storm-swollen Calaveras River about a quarter-mile below New Hogan Dam, personnel with the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call just before 11 a.m. People said the girl was walking with her mother and an infant male on a dirt trail in the area of River of Skulls Nature Trail, when she fell down an embankment into the river and was swept away.

Deputies and sheriff’s investigators, rangers at New Hogan Lake and firefighters from Calaveras Consolidated Fire and CalFire responded to the scene and began to search for the girl.

Rangers located the girl close to the riverbank and pulled her from the river, where CPR was started, Calavera County sheriff’s personnel said. She was transported to Mark Twain Hospital where she was pronounced dead from apparent drowning. Names of the child and her mother were not released.

New Hogan Lake reservoir is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility about 40 miles northwest of Sonora. An employee at New Hogan Lake referred questions about the drowning to an Army Corps of Engineers public affairs office in the Bay Area.

New Hogan Lake was holding 71 percent of capacity on Friday. Earlier Friday more than 6,600 cubic feet of water flowing into the reservoir and more than 2,000 cfs was being released from it to flow downstream. New Hogan Dam provides flood protection to the city of Stockton and water for irrigation, drinking and hydroelectric power.

Calaveras County sheriff’s personnel urged people to remember that due to recent storms and precipitation there is a flood and high water advisory for all creeks, tributaries, and rivers in Calaveras County.

“Caution must be taken when near these sources of water to prevent injury or death to yourself or others,” Calaveras County sheriff’s personnel said.
