A marriage. A birth. A graduation. An anniversary.
These celebrations are part of life and have been a part of The Union Democrat since its beginning in 1854. We continue to this day to highlight these milestones in our weekly Community section.
In 1877, these items ran in the Local News section. The June 30, 1877, column featured a wedding announcement for M.B. Moody and Miss May Van Ausdell, whose wedding was “quite an event, as both parties are well known throughout the county and number their personal friends by the score.”
By 1927, the “Personals and Items in Brief” carried these announcements, and by 1966 it was called “With the Women.” In the 1980s, it was Community before spending about a decade as the Neighbors page. Then it was once again named Community, which brings us up to date.
Though the section name has changed through the years, its purpose has not — announcing significant life events that are important to our readers.
On that note, we want you us to send us news of your life events — engagements, marriages, births, first birthdays, college graduations, 50th anniversaries (or 60th or 70th, etc.), military service announcements and the rare five-generation picture. We want them all.
To submit your achievement or that of a family member, email firstname.lastname@example.org, or call (209) 588-4535.
We look forward to hearing from you!
