Religious Events for April 21, 2017

Members of Unity Spiritual Center will participate in the second annual Ecumenical Service at the Sonora Opera Hall on Sunday.

The event, organized by Innerfaith Communities in Unity, will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The theme is “One Earth, Many Paths.”

Participating groups include Unity Spiritual Center in the Mother Lode, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tuolumne County, Shambala Meditation Group of Sonora, Mother Lode Jewish Community, Baha’i Faith group and the Muslim community. Everyone is invited.

Unity Spiritual Center also will participate in the Spirit Mind Body presents Earth Day on April 22 at the Sonora Opera Hall on Washington Street.

An Introduction to Eastern Orthodox Spirituality will be offered beginning Wednesday at St. Susanna Orthodox Christian Church in Sonora.

The three-part lecture series will be given by Brother Andrew Rossi of St. Silouan Russian Orthodox Monastery.

The series will include:

Wednesday — “The Heart of Prayer is Prayer of the Heart”: Eastern Orthodox “heart spirituality” as the way to union with God;

May 3 — “Humility, the Cross and the Prayer of Jesus”: Three renunciations that open the door to the Kingdom of Heaven;

May 10 — “We Shall See Him as He Is”: Attaining the unattainable through the gift of deifying grace and the vision of divine light.

The St. Patrick’s Altar Society will present its annual Spring Luncheon May 1 in Sonora.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, 98 Jackson St., in Sonora, for a salad luncheon and dessert followed by bingo games.

Cost is $6 per person.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church will host a prayer service May 4 in recognition of the 66th National Day of Prayer.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, 13380 Joshua way in East Sonora.

Ramona Harris, M.A., M.P.S., of the Stockton Diocese School of Ministry, will present “Finding God in All Things — A Day with the Catholic Mystics,”on May 6 at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include a potluck.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sonora will hold a drawing for a 2017 Subaru Outback Limited, or $35,000, on May 20.

Tickets cost $100 each, and only 1,200 tickets will be sold. Ticket-holders need not be present to win.

Sierra Bible Church’s Seasons group meets from 10 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month.

The group is for women 18 and older and provides a time to gather and study scripture. Brunch is provided.

Meditation and Modern Buddhism in Sonora is offered from 3 to 4 p.m. each Sunday at the Yoga Loft, 72 S. Stewart St.

The meetings provide group study, meditations and discussion. Hosts will play recorded teachings by American Buddhist nun Kelsang Chogyop.

A $5 to $10 donation is requested.
