Vets preparing care packages

Two Tuolumne County Vietnam War veterans are spearheading an effort to send care packages to servicemen and servicewomen who already have been called up to duty overseas.

Ron Hobbs, president of the Sonora chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, and member Ron Colombani of Phoenix Lake, want to hear from families and friends of servicepeople already in the Persian Gulf region.

Hobbs said all veteran organizations are behind the effort, being called We Care.

"It's just to show them the old-time veterans care, too," said Ed Brouillard, vice president of the American Legion Post 58 and member of the Tuolumne County Veterans Committee.

The vets plan to send practical items like writing paper, pens, disposable cameras, chewing gum and dried fruit. Each shoebox-size package will have about $50 worth of goods.

The vets hope to send 100 packages, but need to know whom to send the packages to.

People who know of servicepeople who would like to receive packages can call Hobbs at 984-3015, Colombani at 533-2106 or Brouillard at 984-4719 with names and addresses.

Any businesses or people who would like to donate money or goods to the cause may call the above numbers.
