Seventy-six American flags were unfurled along Highway 120 in Groveland and Big Oak Flat in honor of Presidents' Day yesterday, thanks to American Legion Post No. 300 of Groveland. Member Milan "Doc" Barto conceived the idea of displaying flags on patriotic holidays more than a year ago, and the post, headed by Cmdr. Roland Elliott, agreed to put up the money and time. The number of flags commemorates the Declaration of Independence, which was signed on July 4, 1776, declaring the 13 original colonies of the United States to be free and independent of England. American Legion Post members and their spouses meet for potluck dinners and business at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at Groveland Community Hall on Main Street.
