William Martin

Aug. 31, 1960 — Feb. 3, 2003

William Martin, 42, of Sierra Conservation Center, died Monday at a Manteca hospital, after a long illness.

Mr. Martin was born in Bakersfield.

He had served in the Navy and was an electrician and had worked for various employers.

Mr. Martin is survived by his mother, Clara Martin, of Livermore.

No service will be held. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Norma Jean (Perry) Condie

Jan. 10, 1919 — Feb. 4, 2003

Norma Jean (Perry) Condie, 84, of Sonora died Feb. 4 at a Sonora hospital.

Mrs. Condie was a native of Elmira, N.Y., and lived in Sonora for the past nine years.

A homemaker, she was devoted to her family. She loved to cook and bake and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially pinochle. She was a member of the humane society, and she was very found of her dog, Molly.

Mrs. Condie is survived by a son, Tom Greenfield of Sonora; a daughter, Susan Wilkerson of Long Beach; a niece she raised as her daughter, Karen Luginbuhl; 11 grandchildren, Robert Smith, April Felkner, Christine McKenney, Jeff Burkhammer, Lisa Frayne, Daniel Greenfield, Amy Greenfield and Kelli Greenfield, Tara Lusby, Lori Engel and Heather Wilkerson; 16 great-grandchildren, Hunter Felkner, Brianna and Robert Smith, Joanna and Bryan Handleson, Melissa Snitzer, Samantha and Steven Price, Denny and Sophia Frayne, Sarah Burkhammer, Kasey McDow, Ryan Erickson, Jacob Kurmins, Alexcis and Chastan Lusby.

A service will be held at Forest Lawn Mortuary and Cemetery, West Covina. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

Mildred F. Schick

Dec. 11, 1911 — Feb. 5, 2003

Mildred F. Schick, former principal of Shaws Flat School, died Wednesday at a Sonora care home. She was 91.

A native of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Schick was born to George and Louise Simpson and came to California by train with her parents and sister in 1923. The family settled in San Jose. Her parents separated in 1935, and her mother married William Donning in 1945.

After attending San Jose Normal School, Mrs. Schick became an elementary school teacher, eventually specializing in teaching both the mentally handicapped and the gifted. Mrs. Schick also served as a role model by bringing college students into her classroom.

Mrs. Schick and her husband, Floyd, spent vacations fishing at their Niagara Creek cabin in Tuolumne County's high country. They eventually bought land below the snow line and moved to Sonora full time in 1964. She lived in Sonora and later Jamestown for a total of 38 years.

Dario Cassina, former Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, hired Mrs. Schick to teach Tuolumne County's first class for the mentally disabled shortly after she moved to the county. She taught at Soulsbyville School, then at Shaws Flat School, where she was principal from 1968 until her retirement in 1972.

After retirement, she joined Tuolumne County Senior Citizens and served on its board for nine years. She was vice president and treasurer for three years and president for two years. In 1987, she was named Senior of the Year by the group.

She also had been a member of Parent Teacher Association and Order of the Eastern Star Jarman Lodge in San Jose.

In addition to her husband of 66 years, Floyd Schick of Jamestown, Mrs. Schick is survived by two nieces, Jeanine Ziggler of Sacramento and Linda Omega of New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise F. Donning, who lived to be 102, in 1993.

No service will be held. Burial will be private. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
