Tuolumne and Calaveras counties' fire safe councils will hold their January meetings next week, in hopes of electing a board of directors for each and discussing projects the groups want to tackle.

Fire safe councils were formed late last year by volunteers who want to inform, educate and prepare their communities for catastrophic wildfires, said Mark Valle, fire safe council coordinator. Each council is a nonprofit organization.

While all four groups have elected executive officers, each now needs a three- to 10-member board of directors, Valle said. Once elected, the boards will join officers in voting on prospective fire-protection projects for their communities.

"When we decide what to use grant dollars for, there has to be a majority vote of the board of directors," Valle said, adding that directors are usually people who don't desire the responsibility of president or secretary, but still want to have a say for their community.

Valle said the councils will also begin discussing what potential projects deserve funding to protect neighborhoods and homes from fire.

Anyone living in Tuolumne or Calaveras Counties is invited to attend fire safe council meetings.
