Sonora hoops routes Gustine

OAKDALE — The Sonora High School boys' basketball barely broke while routing Gustine, 56-16, Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 33rd annual Oakdale Rotary Holiday Classic.

The Wildcats (6-5) moved above .500 for the first time this season with their third straight victory, and set up a semifinal game tonight at 7 against unbeaten Downey of Modesto (12-0), which routed Riverbank 55-20.

The Sonora-Downey winner will play for the championship Saturday night at 8 against either Oakdale or Johansen of Modesto, which won 71-29 over Hughson and 71-60 over Ripon Christian, respectively. The semifinal losers will play for third place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Center Tom McDonnell scored 16 points against overmatched Gustine (3-5). Sonora led 17-4 after one quarter, 29-10 at halftime and 41-12 at the end of three quarters in holding the Redskins to a point total from another era.

Sophomores — Sonora (6-4) beat Gustine 49-33 behind 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists by Dustin Scholl, 13 points by Ryan Relei, and five points and five assists by Marcus Cendro.
