SCOTTS VALLEY — Joel DePaoli and Andrew Ramirez placed for the Sonora High School wrestling team in the prestigious Coast Classic, which was held Friday and Saturday at Scotts Valley High.

DePaoli won five of seven matches to finish fifth at 152 pounds and Ramirez went 4-3 to take sixth at 140. As a team, Sonora finished 29th in the huge, 42-school tournament despite entering only five wrestlers.

"It's one of the top four or five tournaments in the state, and our guys got to see a lot of people that were really good," Sonora coach Jon Abernathy said. "it shows them where they have to go to get to state."

DePaoli and Ramirez certainly have State Tournament aspirations, as does fellow senior Jex Baldwin, who missed by one match of wrestling for a medal at 160.

Also entered for Sonora were 103-pound sophomore Gabe Prieto and 215-pound freshman Andrew Blume.

Next up for the Wildcats is their own Robert Hatler Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Bud Castle Gym.

Modesto tourney

Summerville's Brent Buzinski split four matches at 145 pounds for the Bears' best showing in the Western Invitational at Modesto Junior College.

Justin Cole won his opener at 135 pounds.

Summerville's next action, like Sonora's, is in the Hatler tourney.
