Bears win Riverbank opener

RIVERBANK — A thundering dunk by Joe Sanders helped spark a big third quarter for the Summerville High School boys' basketball team,, which rolled past Calvary Temple of Modesto 72-60 on Thursday night in the first round of the Riverbank Tournament.

Summerville reached a season-high in points scored thanks to Sanders (24 points, 13 rebounds), forward Cody Munsel (18 points, seven rebounds) and point guard Quint Gerber (10 points, five assists).

Summerville faces Riverbank at 8:30 tonight in the semifinals. The Bears suffered their only loss of the season on Tuesday when the Bruins topped them 62-49 in the valley.

Tonight's winner plays for the championship Saturday night at 7:30.

Shasta tourney

At Redding, Sonora (2-3) had its two-game winning streak snapped by Enterprise, 61-44, in the first round of the Shasta Tournament.

Center Tom McDonnell scored 12 points, junior guard Zach Dyer 10 and senior guard Aaron Jolly nine for Sonora, which plays Shasta at 5 p.m. today in the consolation bracket.

Redwood tourney

At Castro Valley, Mother Lode Christian (5-1) advanced to the consolation finals of the Redwood Christian Tournament with a 53-38 victory over San Francisco Christian behind 19 points — including four 3-pointers — by senior guard Cory Henson.

Center Chuck Storm added 10 points for the Cougars.

Delhi tourney

At Delhi, Tioga (2-2) and Don Pedro (2-3) play each other at 5 p.m. after dropping first-round games in the Delhi tournament, Tioga 71-62 to Turlock Christian and Don Pedro 55-32 to the host team.

Danny Monroe scored 24 points (including four 3-pointers), grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals and Jason Wiercinski had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Tioga

Nick Swisegood and Chris Klein scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Panther, with each making a pair of treys.
