New signs for the times

After years of discussing parking problems in Murphys, the Murphys Business Association is posting new parking signs throughout the town.

The signs, sporting a "tommyknocker" — a little mining gremlin — will be posted at 15 locations throughout the town, pointing drivers to parking lots at the Black Bart Theater on Algiers Street, the Masonic Lodge on Church Street and the old schoolhouse on Jones Street.

Association President Bill Davies said local merchants felt visitors to the town couldn't find parking lots because of a hodgepodge of parking signs throughout the town.

"So we decided to replace the various parking signs with signs that are colorful and eye-grabbing and all look alike," he said.

The first sign was hung Wednesday afternoon on a Main Street pole not far from the Murphys Hotel. Davies said he hopes to have all the signs in place by the middle of next week.

The metal signs — ranging in size from 12 inches by 18 inches to 24 inches by 30 inches — were made by Gateway Press, he said. They cost about $72 each.
