TRACY — Sonora High School opened its 2002 girls' tennis season Wednesday by edging Tracy, 3-2, in a non-league match.

The teams were Valley Oak League opponents the last six years, but Tracy is now in the San Joaquin Athletic Association.

A sweep by the doubles teams of Hannah Boyack-Molly Hongola and Liz Jager-Olivia Segerstrom paced Sonora's victory. Boyack and Hongola won 6-0 over Tiana Carnes and Brooke Dooley in the No. 1 doubles match, while No. 2 Jager and Segerstrom did the same against Megan Malow and Valerie Serrato.

In singles, Jessica Mefford scored a pivotal point for Sonora with a 6-4 victory over Kelly Woodard in the No. 3 match. Sonora's No.1 and No. 2 players, Ari Nesper and Josee Bowser, dropped their matches 6-2 and 6-4 to Caren Chato and Ashley Denton, respectively.

With experience at singles and some promising newcomers in the doubles ranks, Sonora coach Carey Marmesh has a good outlook on the season.

"I think we'll be competitive this year," Marmesh said. "With Tracy and West (of Tracy) out of the league, I think we have a good shot at third place."

Sonora went 7-9 in the VOL and 8-12 overall last year, and now Marmesh feels her team can chase favorites East Union and Sierra of Manteca.

The Wildcats play their first home match Friday at 3 p.m. against Ceres, and then host Atwater next Wednesday and visit Merced on Friday, Aug. 30, before beginning league play Tuesday, Sept. 10, on the road against new VOL member Pitman of Turlock.
