Sonora swim teams roll in first league meet

Sonora High School opened the Valley Oak League swimming season Tuesday with easy girls and boys victories over Los Banos at Sonora Pool.

The girls won 130-27 and the boys 112-56.

Six varsity Sac-Joaquin Section qualifying times were posted by the girls, three in relays and three in individual events. Lisa Watts, Becky Clinite, Melisa Hough and Katie Baier opened the meet with a qualifying time of two minutes, 8.43 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay. Watts and Clinite are freshmen and Hough and Baier are sophomores.

Baier, Watts, freshman Heather Fisher and Hough swam another qualifier of 1:53.76 in the 200 freestyle relay, while the Baier-Watts-Clinite-Hough team qualified again in the 400 free relay in 4:10.30. They won each event.

Junior Alison Gourley posted qualifying times of 1:09.69 and 1:16.94 while winning the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke, respectively, and Baier swam Sonoras other qualifying time, 1:05.59, while capturing the 100 backstroke. Both of Gourleys times were personal bests.

Riley Marmesh and Matt Barnett swam section qualifying times for the boys, Marmesh 1:59.87 in winning the 200 free and Barnett 2:16.88 in taking the 200 IM.

Marmesh anchored 200 free relay teammates Robert Dickerson, Josh Land and Matt Yacovetti to a qualifying time of 1:42.38 and anchored Matt and Aaron Barnett and Dickerson to another qualifier of 3:47.33 in the 400 free relay. Sonora won both those relays and also took the 200 medley relay in 1:59.12 with Matt Barnett, Kevin Lancaster, Dickerson and Josh Land.
