Calaveras voters gave Kevin Raggio of Angels Camp the office of county coroner-administrator in a decisive victory over his two opponents.

Raggio, who is currently chief deputy coroner, chalked up 7,932 votes or 67.8 percent of the count. Jack Horner of Sheep Ranch, chief of the Mountain Ranch Volunteer Fire Company, received 2,034 votes or 17.4 percent.

Julie Clements, a veterinarian, received 1,708 votes or 14.6 percent.

Reached at his home after the votes had been tallied, Raggio said he was very happy and very humbled.

He said, Ive got some big shoes to fill Terry Parkers.

Parker has been Calaveras County coroner and administrator for 20 years.

I just want to run the office with the same dignity and respect that he has for the last 20 years, Raggio said. Hes got a lot of integrity and I hope that I can match that.

Raggio, who at 36 was the youngest of the three candidates running for the position, has lived in Angels Camp all his life.

I think I ran a clean campaign and the people of the county saw that, he said. I truly appreciate the outpouring of support from our community.

Raggios two opponents had criticized the practice of having the mortuary owner also serve as county coroner, which Raggio does and Parker has done before him.

Both Clements and Horner had campaigned on the platform of moving the coroners office under the auspices of the sheriffs office.
