Slow quarter costly again

TRACY For the second consecutive day, a terrible second quarter cost the Summerville High School boys basketball team at the Tracy Holiday Classic.

The Bears dropped a 58-52 decision to Manteca in a consolation-bracket quarterfinal Thursday thanks primarily to a 15-3 second-quarter deficit.

We had a horrible second quarter, and that was the game, Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said. We were even or ahead in the other three quarters.

In Summervilles 86-53 loss to McAteer of San Francisco on Wednesday, the Bears were outscored 17-4 in the second quarter.

Summerville outscored Manteca 32-25 in the second half, including a decided 15-10 edge in the third quarter, but could not completely make up for the second quarter.

Terry Sullivan was the lone Bear to score in double figures with 16 points. Quint Gerber and Daniel Atkins added nine points apiece while Joe Sanders and Eric Bisset each tacked on eight points.

We seem to be trying to hard to score, Ronten said. We need to get into the flow of the game.

Summerville will face either Los Plumas or Freedom at 3:30 p.m. today in an elimination game. If the Bears win, they will play at 3 p.m. Saturday at Tracy High.
